Hello peaches! It’s #WaltWednesday! Today I am excited to share my thoughts on the new Finding Dory movie from Pixar and Walt Disney Studios, and be sure to read through, as you can bring some Finding Dory excitement to your house with a Hallmark Itty Bittys prize pack.
Even though I had made plans initially to go the night it premiered, due to life with teens and adult kids (plus an always traveling husband), we didn’t get to see the movie until after opening weekend had come to a close. As such, we did not contribute to the numbers of this smash hit over the weekend, but I am sure we will add to these staggering stats:
- Dory had the largest opening weekend for an Animated Feature. Ever.
- Dory brought in an estimated $136.1 million this weekend , compared to Finding Nemo’s $70.2 million opening back in 2003.
- Dory broke the record for the largest single day and opening day for an animated film with its opening day totaling an estimated $54.9 million. Included in that opening day total is $9.2 million in Thursday previews, also a record for an animated feature.
- Dory also opened in 29 international territories this weekend scoring an estimated $50 million for a global opening gross of $186.2 million. (Source: Box Office Mojo)
So, Dory is a rock-star. She’s a rock-star but she also has an entourage that helps her along: Nemo and Marlin are back along with a few other characters from Finding Nemo (look hard, you might miss some of those awesome characters) but we also welcome a whole slew of new characters, each with their own unique personalities and roles in Dory’s life. A grumpy septopus named Hank; Destiny, a near-sighted whale shark and Becky, a bird who helps save the day are just a few of the great new members of the ever-growing Pixar universe.
The artwork and animation on this film is amazing, you can definitely see how far technology and computer animation has come since Finding Nemo was made and I was blown away by the realism of some of the shots. Pixar has gotten so good at what they do now, there are times when I can’t even tell I am watching animation. It really is amazing!
Many of my friends have already seen the movie multiple times. I will see it multiple times. Why? Because of Dory’s ultimate take-away theme. Disabilities are not necessarily limitations. It is okay to be differently-abled, it is also okay to have to work around your disability to fit your life. Instead of fighting it, accept it, understand it and learn to live with it and be happy. We are asked in the movie when Nemo and Marlin come to a rough spot, “What would Dory do?” and the answer is simply this, Dory would keep swimming. She wouldn’t give up. She’d work through it and not look back, because Dory goes forward living in the moment and not letting anything, including her disability of short-term memory loss, hold her back.
Finding Dory reminds us that we all have different abilities, some stronger than others. We are reminded about self-realization and self-reliance. There is nothing wrong with believing in yourself! There is also nothing wrong with letting some things go and moving on. Dory remembers what she needs to, in the way she needs to. What she doesn’t need, she lets it go. And keeps swimming. Seriously, shouldn’t we all be doing that in our lives?
